10 Things to Do in Port Harcourt: A First-Timer's Guide

First time in Port Harcourt? Before you scream “Port Harcourt, I'm inside youuu…” start here. Whether you have a free afternoon, a full weekend or just one night, these are some places and experiences worth putting on your PH itinerary.

1. Spend an Afternoon at Port Harcourt Pleasure Park

Enjoy an outdoor escape right in the city centre. From rides and games to mini cinema, food, greenery and fresh air, there's enough here to fill an easy afternoon.

2. Play Golf or Unwind at Port Harcourt Golf Club

Established in 1928, this historic club has an 18-hole golf course but you don't have to be a golfer to enjoy it. Come for a game, a swim, indoor sports, dining or simply a slower afternoon.

3. Brunch or Sip Coffee at Woodhouse Cafè

Need somewhere to slow down? Settle into the artsy, cosy atmosphere of Wood House Café off Sani Abacha Road for coffee, brunch and an unhurried afternoon.

4. Get Creative in Port Harcourt

See the city's creative side at Delaroke Art Gallery or Moriri Gallery, or get hands-on with a painting, pottery or tote-bag session at The Paint Therapy.

5. Eat Your Way Through Port Harcourt

Port Harcourt's food scene runs from polished restaurants to smoky roadside grills. Try somewhere like Asia Town for an upscale meal, then go local with bolé and fish—head to Elekahia, Rumuomasi or one of the neighbourhood spots serving it across the city.

6. Spend a Few Hours at Port Harcourt Mall

Shopping, food, movies and air conditioning, sometimes that's exactly the plan. It's also an easy indoor option when Port Harcourt decides to rain on your itinerary.

7. Plan a Waterfront Escape

Want to slow things down? Head to The Waterside Restaurant & Lounge for food, drinks and waterfront views, or spend some time by the water at PH Tourist Beach.

8. Take a Stroll Through Isaac Boro Park

Take a breather at this green space named after Niger Delta activist Isaac Boro. It's a simple stop, but useful if you're exploring the city centre and want somewhere to sit, walk and take in the surroundings.

9. Take a Day Trip to Bonny Island

Make a day of it. Take the boat from Bonny Jetty, explore Finima Nature Park, then experience Bonny's waterways, history and riverine landscape before heading back. It's one of the easiest ways to see a completely different side of Rivers State.

10. Do the Port Harcourt Night-Out Circuit

Start with dinner at 12:11 Restaurant, Native Tray or The Red Coral, then move to The 411 or SOK Lounge for drinks and music. If the night is still young, find a late-night spot around New GRA and let dinner become drinks, drinks become dancing, and somehow it's 2 a.m. already.

Bonus: Explore Port Harcourt's Local Side

Go beyond GRA and see the city where it actually lives. Browse local markets—Mile 1 and Mile 3 markets, Rumuokoro market, Creek Road market and Oil Mill Market—discover neighbourhood food, fabrics, crafts and everyday commerce, and experience the energy of places like Diobu, Rumuola, Rumuokoro, Borokiri, Artillery...
