The Weekend Is Not Going to Spend Itself

There is a particular kind of Friday evening that begins at 5:00 PM. Your body is still at work, but mentally you have left. Your laptop is open, your boss is talking, but your mind is already doing budget allocation; if you should go have some fun or whether ₦20,000 can survive until Monday.

This is the difficult part about being young and employed in Nigeria. You have money, but not that kind of money. You want to go out and turnup, you also want to pay for data subscription and the many other bills you're neck-deep in.

And somehow it is already Friday!

So this weekend, we are going to try something different. Something that won't bore holes into your pockets. Shall we?

Friday, 5:00PM — Leave Work. Do Not Go Home Yet.

The first mistake is going home. Because once you go home, put on your house clothes and lie down "for 20 minutes," the weekend is finished. You know yourself. So leave work and go somewhere that feels unlike work. Try CornerStore Cafe on Tombia street. It is the kind of place where you can sit down alone or with someone, order something, and have light hearted conversations. You don't need a reservation. You also don't need to announce that you're outside.

Friday, 8:30PM — Somebody Is Going To CJ Blast

CJ Blast is happening at WhiteJade Event Centre , and the time is not one of those Nigerian time situations where you should consider arriving at midnight. The event is listed for 8:30pm on Friday, August 14.

Go if your Friday needs noise. Go if you have been listening to the same three songs in your room and need evidence that other people exist. Just don't become too friendly with your credit card when the alcohol kicks in.

PS.: 10:00AM — Fresh Finds On Campus takes place at UNIPORT on Friday, August 14, so if you're around campus, make it part of the weekend rather than treating Friday as something that ends after work.

Campus is one of the few places in Port Harcourt where you can walk into something without knowing exactly what you're going to get out of it.

Saturday Morning — Go Outside and Touch Grass

Saturday morning has two kinds of people. There are those who wake up at 11:43am, look at their phone, discover 19 new WhatsApp messages, 5 missed calls, and decide the day has already passed. Then there are those who wake up early and go somewhere.

This weekend, be the second person.

Saturday, 12:00PM — Kiss With Rekii

By noon, if your Saturday has not properly started with a run club or something, Kiss With Rekii — Summer Splash should solve that problem.

12pm is early enough to still have a whole day afterwards. This is important. We are not trying to spend the entire weekend recovering from Saturday night. We have plans, we have Sunday. We have Monday, unfortunately.

Saturday, 2:00PM — Food Na Life Festival

Now we arrive at something that intersects with everybody: Food.

Food Na Life Festival 2026 runs Saturday and Sunday from 2pm at Amadi Ama Secondary School, Abuloma Road. The festival promises food, music, games, culture and entertainment, with regular tickets listed at ₦4,000 at the gate and early-bird tickets from ₦3,000.

There is something very Nigerian about naming an event Food Na Life. Because what else were you expecting us to say? Food Na Problem? No. Food is life.

The Hidden Gem — Go Somewhere Quiet

Port Harcourt has a funny relationship with leisure. We are very good at restaurants, cafès and lounges, promising at organizing events. But sometimes what you actually want is somewhere you can hear yourself think.

Try Wood House Café on Louis Drive, off Sani Abacha Road. It is the kind of place that works when you want the opposite of a Saturday crowd. Carry your book along or your laptop or take the friend who talks too much. You may want to reconsider on taking that friend who talks too much if what you actu need is some quiet.

Saturday Afternoon — Spend ₦0

This is the part of the guide where we do something radical. We suggest that you don't spend money. How?

Go to Pleasure Park. It is relatively free (Pay gate fee of ₦1,500). Walk, sit, watch people, take pictures. Talk. Do absolutely nothing productive.

There is a strange pressure among young people to make leisure look expensive. If there isn't a receipt, apparently the outing didn't happen. But a Saturday afternoon does not need to be a ₦40,000 experience. Sometimes you need somewhere to sit, and gather your thoughts, while the city moves around you.

Pleasure Park runs through the weekend, from 6am to 11pm. Bring water, bring your headphones. Invite the friend who has been saying "we need to catch up" for six months. Catch up.

Saturday Night — Pick Your Chaos

If at dusk, you are still at Food Na Life festival, stay. If you have escaped the food festival and/or you want a nightlife spot featuring live DJ sets, energetic dancing and views of the city from above then Sky Bar in New GRA is one option. Perhaps this is your cue to go wear the outfit you ordered from Shein that has been lounging in your wardrobe, unworn, for 2 months now.

Just remember: the view is free only in photographs.

Sunday — Don't Make It A Recovery Day

Sunday has been unfairly reduced to church, rice and regret. There is more to it if you wake up, dress well and take yourself out.

Start slowly. Coffee. Beverage drink. Food. A little sunlight. A little conversation.

If you want somewhere easy for a quiet Sunday, Sauce and Spoon Café off Woji Road in New GRA is exactly the kind of place to let Saturday leave your body slowly. Sit down, order something, don't rush. Monday is already waiting. It can wait a little longer.

Sunday, 6:00PM — Let MC Walter Close The Weekend

If you still have time and a full purse, MC Walter Live In Port Harcourt: Family Hangout takes place Sunday at 6pm. Tickets are listed from ₦5,000.

And honestly, comedy is a reasonable way to end a weekend. You have spent the last three days worrying about money. Now somebody else can give you a reason to laugh about it.

If None Of This Is Your Thing…

That's okay. You don't have to attend an event to have a weekend worth remembering.

Try this instead:

Eat: Head to Maleesky Special on Ibeto Road for something properly local — bole, roast fish, pepper sauce that means business. If you'd rather sit down with a spoon than a napkin, we are happy to point you towards a bowl of catfish pepper soup or fisherman soup instead, at Tilapia & Tinz

Chill: Spend an afternoon at Isaac Boro Park. Bring a friend, bring a book, and sit under a tree, or bring absolutely no plans.
